The Immigration and Citizenship Service (ICS) has embarked on a comprehensive modernization program designed to meet national demands and align with international standards.

In the last Ethiopian fiscal year (2017 E.C.), ICS reached an impressive milestone by issuing 1.4 million passports. The adoption of streamlined procedures and digital platforms played a key role in handling this volume efficiently; ensuring citizens received their documents with greater speed and reliability than ever before.

During the same period, ICS provided services to 7.2 million travelers passing through Ethiopian entry and exit points. By strengthening border management systems and modernizing traveler services, ICS has been able to facilitate smoother and more secure movement for millions of passengers, while also contributing to the nation’s image as a gateway to Africa. 3,868 people who attempted to obtain a passport using forged documents have been placed under strict supervision. This demonstrates the institution’s commitment to ensuring security and carrying out effective and result-oriented work.

The modernization drive has also yielded significant financial returns. In 2017 E.C., ICS generated revenue exceeding 34 billion birr, underscoring the institution’s importance not only as a service provider but also as a vital contributor to the national economy.

Furthermore, Ethiopia has successfully joined the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Public Key Directory system, enhancing the security and efficiency of electronic passport verification and consolidating the country’s position in global travel security.

Overall, the 2017 fiscal year was highly successful, marked by significant achievements and the delivery of excellent services. ICS will focus on sustaining last year’s impressive achievements, with a particular emphasis on enhancing customer satisfaction by providing faster, fairer, and more reliable services. The institution remains committed to building trust and delivering citizen-centered services that meet both national needs and international standards.
