Message from the Honorable Director General, Ms. Selamawit Dawit

Welcome to the Ethiopian Immigration and Citizenship Services website. As Director General, I am proud to highlight the remarkable progress we achieved in the last nine months of 2018 E.C. fiscal year in transforming our services to better meet your needs.

Over the past nine months of 2018 E.C., the institution has made significant achievements in service delivery. It successfully issued passports to more than 1.1 million citizens. In addition, over 847,000 foreign nationals were served through visa, Ethiopian Origin ID cards and related services. The institution also facilitated the movement of more than 5.4 million inbound and outbound travelers through air and land border control points.

In terms of revenue generation, the institution collected over 30.9 billion birr from service fees, including passports, visas, Ethiopian Origin ID cards, and other related services. Regarding service accessibility, the number of passport service delivery points has been expanded from 12 to 22 branch offices. In addition, passport and other related services are currently being provided through 10 one-stop “Mesob” service centers, further improving convenience and access for customers.

With respect to the registration and control of foreign nationals, 42,809 individuals working in various companies across the country were verified and brought into legal compliance. In addition, a total of 10,530 Ethiopians and foreign nationals attempting to enter or exit the country illegally were intercepted and subjected to legal measures during the reporting period. A total of 3,638 Ethiopian and foreign individuals were apprehended for attempting to illegally obtain passport services using forged documents or false proof of nationality and were placed under legal control and subjected to appropriate legal measures in accordance with the law.

In the area of civil registration, 4.8 million vital events were recorded within the nine-month period. Efforts are also underway to modernize the registration system through the integration of artificial intelligence technologies, further enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and service delivery.

Overall, the last nine months of 2018 fiscal year was highly successful, marked by significant achievements and the delivery of excellent services. ICS will focus on sustaining these impressive achievements, with a particular emphasis on enhancing customer satisfaction by providing fast, reliable, accessible, and internationally competitive services for all citizens, anytime and anywhere.
