About Ethiopian Origin ID

The Ethiopian Origin ID is issued to individuals of Ethiopian descent who hold foreign citizenship. This ID grants various benefits, including visa-free entry into Ethiopia, the right to own property, and easier access to residency and employment opportunities. It aims to strengthen the connection between Ethiopia and its diaspora.

Requirements

  • Properly filled out application form.
  • An ordinary passport valid for more than 6 months.
  • Copy of entry visa (If it’s e-visa, visa print out) and date stamp.
  • If the tourist visa has been extended before, a copy of the last extended visa.
  • Machine readable Ethiopian passport or Authenticated birth certificate and
  • If you have a brother, sister, or father who is an Ethiopian citizen, you must provide a copy of their Kebele ID or passport. If you hold foreign citizenship but have been issued Kebele ID card previously, you must provide a copy of it; however, the names of your father and grandfather must match those on the Kebele ID.
  • One recent passport-sized photograph.
  • Those born in Ethiopia but whose place of birth is registered as a foreign country (e.g., Eritrea or Somalia), court decisions and supporting documents, including copies of Ethiopian IDs or passports of immediate family members (parents or siblings/sisters or brothers/ who are Ethiopian citizens), must be submitted.

If the child is under 18 years old, a legal adoption document and a copy of the adoptive parent’s passport must be attached.

In case of name change, a certified legal court decision must be submitted; if the language is not Amharic or English, it must be translated by a legal entity.

If it is not possible to provide family documents due to various reasons, a death certificate must be submitted;

N.B:- A mandatory service fee applies: 300 USD for regular and 400 USD for urgent service.
A daily penalty applies if you don’t renew your ID on time.
It is not possible to issue Ethiopian origin ID by proxy.
